S3 vs R2 for media storage

The media storage problem
Media buckets grow quickly. Videos, image exports, thumbnails, project archives, and client deliveries can create many folders and very large object counts. The right storage choice depends on cost, region needs, delivery model, and how your team searches and shares files.
Amazon S3 and Cloudflare R2 both use S3-compatible workflows, but they are positioned differently.
When Amazon S3 fits well
Amazon S3 is strong when you already run workloads on AWS or need the broadest ecosystem around storage, compute, lifecycle rules, policies, analytics, and compliance tooling.
S3 is often a good fit for:
- Existing AWS infrastructure.
- Complex lifecycle and archive workflows.
- Deep IAM policy control.
- Multi-region enterprise architecture.
- Teams already using CloudFront, Lambda, or AWS analytics.
When Cloudflare R2 fits well
Cloudflare R2 is attractive for media workflows because it removes egress fees in many common patterns. For teams that frequently serve or move large media files, egress cost can matter as much as storage cost.
R2 is often a good fit for:
- Public or semi-public media distribution.
- Video and image delivery through Cloudflare.
- Teams trying to reduce egress cost.
- S3-compatible workflows without AWS lock-in.
- Smaller teams that want simpler pricing.
Operational needs are similar
Whether you choose S3 or R2, the daily workflow is similar:
- Find the right media object.
- Check folder size before transfer.
- Share a private file temporarily.
- Upload or replace assets.
- Keep metadata accurate.
- Avoid exposing the whole bucket.
This is where S3Panel helps. It gives the same operational surface across S3-compatible providers, so the team does not need a totally different tool for every backend.
Search matters more than provider choice
For large media libraries, the storage provider is only half the story. If the team cannot find files quickly, every provider feels slow. Use consistent naming patterns, indexed search, and folder stats to reduce manual browsing.
Practical recommendation
Use S3 when AWS integration and enterprise controls are the main requirement. Use R2 when egress cost and Cloudflare delivery are more important. In both cases, use a focused object storage manager so day-to-day file work stays clear.
